WE BACK WITH ANOTHER EPISODE OF CURRENTLY WATCHING, CURRENTLY READING FOLKS
🎞 ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953)
format: feature film
genre: romantic comedy
where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
Overwhelmed by her suffocating schedule, touring European princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) takes off for a night while in Rome. When a sedative she took from her doctor kicks in, however, she falls asleep on a park bench and is found by an American reporter, Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck),who takes her back to his apartment for safety. At work the next morning, Joe finds out Ann's regal identity and bets his editor he can get exclusive interview with her, but romance soon gets in the way.
💭 my thoughts: Breakfast at Tiffany’s is probably Audrey Hepburn’s most iconic film, but her role as Princess Ann in Roman Holiday was her first lead role (this role also made her the first actress to win an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for a single performance) and I’ve never seen it until now! She was soooo cute & charming in this role 🫶🏽 and her chemistry with Gregory Peck was *chef’s kiss* If you’re a 90s baby, you probably remember that Disney Channel Original Movie called My Date With The President’s Daughter? I’m pretty sure that film was inspired by Roman Holiday!

📺 PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ORIGINAL SIN
format: series
genre: drama, mystery, slasher
where to watch: HBO Max
Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart; now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls, a brand-new set of Little Liars, find themselves tormented by an unknown 'A'ssailant.
💭 my thoughts: though this is a spin off of the original Pretty Little Liars that premiered on ABC Family (now Freeform), this is a lot grittier and darker than the original. i was fortunate enough to attend the premiere of Original Sin and watched the first episode with the cast, crew, and other invited guests. they took a slasher/horror spin to this show, which made it all the more exciting. this is an HBO Max show so the gritty tone definitely presents itself, but it doesn’t overdo the nudity and drugs which is…refreshing these days lol. the cast is pretty diverse and it’s stacked with Filipinos! Sharon Leal, Lea Salonga, and newcomer Malia Pyles are all in it. though it does fall into the interracial relationship trap (like most shows do) where they try to be progressive by writing in interracial relationships, yet all said relationships involve a white character. newsflash! interracial relationships that don’t involve white people also exist! i’m a product of one! i only saw the first episode though so we’ll see how the rest of the season goes
it officially premieres on HBO Max on july 28, so make sure to tune in! i know i will
🎞 TOP GUN: MAVERICK (2022)
format: feature film
genre: action, drama
where to watch: in theaters
After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.
💭 my thoughts: i went to see this a week after it’s release. i’ve never seen the original so i went into the theater expecting absolutely nothing. honestly—the bar was low because i already had zero expectations. but this film blew my mind! the way they shot all of the cockpit scenes was incredible and i didn’t learn until after watching it, that they didn’t use any green screen. them people was literally up in the sky while filming lmao! this movie had me on the edge of seat the whole time and you really felt like you were in the plane yourself. great film 10/10
i haven’t read anything lately—my mind is all over the place and it’s been hard to focus on reading lol
what have YOU been watching and/or reading? gimme your recs!
