I recently recorded my first guest podcast episode for SKNFLUENCR with celebrity hairstylist Josh Liu. In a segment where we were talking about mental health & immigrant parents, Josh said that when he was younger, he told his parents that he was “sad” (an alternative word for “depression” for lots of young people that may not realize they have it) and his parents told him…
If you’re sad, it’s because you’re bored! If you were preoccupied then you wouldn’t have time to be sad. You’re not busy, that’s why you’re sad!
💀💀💀
So now I wanna ask the audience: what’s the most OUT OF POCKET thing that a relative has ever said to you? Drag them!!!
(and don’t forget to follow @sknfluencr on Instagram for launch & podcast updates!)
TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO:
Josh: “It’s okay if you’re sad, get back on that hamster wheel”
Asia: Yeah, “pull yourself up by the bootstraps and get back to work!”
Josh: You know how many times my parents would tell me, “If you’re sad, it’s because you’re bored”
Asia: *laughs*
Josh: “You need to work hard. When you’re preoccupied, you don’t have time to be sad!” I’m like…what are you talking about?
Asia: *more laughing*
Josh: “It’s cause you’re not busy. That’s why you’re sad!”
Asia: Oh, no. That is such an immigrant parent mentality. Like, I can’t handle it.
Josh: Oof. Let me tell you.
